Within size categories we used runners' opinions from marathonguide.com and other marathon publications to "rank" the marathons. Some local marathons may have been left off the list based on size and our goal to include at least one marathon per state.

Whether or not a marathon is listed on the legend does not prevent runners to use the flags included with our maps to mark their favorite marathons or those marathons they have run.
